Bouldering Climb Basics: 4 Top Tips for Beginners

If you're learning rock climbing, a bouldering climb can help you gain the important skills.

There are a few things you need to keep in mind when you start bouldering, here's a list of 5 practices all beginners need to get in the habit of doing.

1. Don't Skip Your Warm-Up

Warming up is a very important part of climbing. If you don't, you run the risk of injury. Doing simple things like jogging, or skipping can help get your blood pumping.

You'll want to make sure that you are stretched can help you with your range of motion. The more often you stretch the more nimble you will be during your climb.

2. Focus on Your Balance

Balance is one of the key points to bouldering. Finding your center of balance will help you do moves you never thought you could. 

You should aim for a controlled climb, but if you know how to balance your body, you can lunge to reach a farther hold without worry.

3. Climb Circuits

A circuit is a group of problems that are around the same difficulty. This can help you hone your skills and work on your weaknesses. It's also a perk that an indoor bouldering climb can give you that the great outdoors can't.  

Pretty soon you will be able to move on to more difficult circuits and the problems you were struggling with will be a thing of the past.

4. Watch Other Climbers

One of the benefits to bouldering in a gym is being able to watch how the other climbers solve problems. If you're struggling with moving past one you can hang back and see how a few other climbers do it so on your next go you have a better idea of how to work through it.

It's easy to take the easier way out, but part of the joy of bouldering is figuring out a hard problem. It's great to seek guidance, but you should try to figure them out on your own first.
